What Does it Mean to Monetize My Blog?
It’s pretty easy to learn how to monetize your blog. Monetizing your blog means you are implementing a plan to earn income. There are many ways to monetize and each blog requires its own unique plan.
Developing a monetization plan isn’t difficult and it should be done early – at the same time you decide on your niche.
Because if you go to all the trouble of finding a niche, purchasing a domain and hosting, and writing content, only to find out that there’s no money in your niche, that’s a huge bummer!
If you’re blogging for pleasure, it really doesn’t matter what niche you’re in or how you monetize your blog. But if you’re blogging for profit, you must research monetization options and develop a plan for taking action.
How Can I Monetize My Blog?
There are numerous ways to make money from your blog, including:
- Affiliate Marketing
- Pay-Per-Click Advertising
- Selling Ad Space
- Selling your own products – physical or digital
- Sponsored Posts
- Wholesaling and Dropshipping
I’m going to talk about the four most popular ways to make money with you blog – ads, affiliate marketing, products, and services.
Placing ads on your site is easy and earns you passive income. You’re simply leveraging your audience – the more traffic you have, the more you make with ads.
Pay-per-click ads require that a visitor clicks on an ad before they pay you. Pay-per-view ads make you money whenever a visitor sees an ad. For both of these methods, you need a lot of traffic to see good money.
Be cautious about placing ads on your site.
There’s a fine line between “just enough” and “too much.” Too many ads can be very off-putting for your visitor and the last thing you want them doing is clicking away before they’ve read your great content.
Affiliate marketing is probably the most popular way to make money from your blog. The way it works is, you sign up with an affiliate – either directly through a company – like Amazon.com – or with an aggregator like Commission Junction or ShareASale.
You provide your contact information and your blog details and if you’re approved, you can place links in your content. When a visitor clicks on these links and makes a purchase, you make money.
To be successful as an affiliate, I encourage you to only recommend products you use and highly recommend. This helps to build your “know, like, and trust” factor and when your audience knows they can trust you, they’re more likely to purchase the products you promote.
This is true for all monetization methods, but especially for affiliate marketing.
Here’s a hot tip: If there’s a product you love that you want to promote on your site, but you don’t know if they have an affiliate program, check out the product’s website – there’s probably a link on the home page somewhere. You can always do a search for “product/company affilate program” (without the quotes) and see what comes up.
Oh, one more thing. For all of your affiliate/money links, make sure they are nofollow. This is a somewhat advanced concept, but if you incorporate affiliate links in your content from day one, you must make sure they are nofollow.
In your text editor, look for links like this:
<a href=”affiliatesite.com/referrer-ID”> Click here. </a>
Change the code by pasting in the correct attribute after your affiliate link, but before the closing bracket. Here’s how:
<a href=”affiliatesite.com/referrer-ID” rel=”nofollow”>
And if you want to be real smooth, you can add the attribute to have your affiliate link open up in a new window, so you don’t lose your visitor, like this:
<a href=”affiliatesite.com/referrer-ID” target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow”>

Products can be physical or digital. For example, maybe you’re a crafter and want to sell items on your blog. Or you can create digital products like ebooks, reports, and other printables.
Though the first two methods can make you great money, this method is probably the most powerful and profitable because you are in complete control – you decide what you’re selling, how much to sell it for, where to promote it, and can even create your own affiliate program (having other marketers promote and sell your product) or partner up with someone in a joint venture.
To expand on this idea, you could create really high-value, exclusive content and develop a membership program, which would create a community, build your authority, and bring in a steady income for you.
One thing I love about creating your own digital products is that you can automate the process to bring in passive income. So create once, get paid again and again.
If you can learn how to monetize your blog, you can definitely create digital products!
What if you could bring in fast cash from mini-products that you create in about 24 hours?
Last-minute Mini Products might be for you. I’ll be doing a review on this soon, but if you’re interested, check it out.

Services are another powerful form of monetization for your blog, and probably the fastest way to make money online.
If you provide a service that is in high-demand, create a services page on your blog, listing what you do. You can have visitors contact you for more information or list your prices and provide a way for visitors to make a purchase directly on your site.
Some examples of services you could offer include:
- Child care
- Child pickup
- Content writing
- Grahic design
- Homework help
- Pet sitting
It really depends on your business, but be creative and think outside the box. What kinds of services could you offer your visitors?

List it out, be as detailed as you can be at this point…
…and forget all about the money for right now.
Because your top priorities at this point are helping your visitor and creating high value content – lots of it!
If you get hung up on the money part (as I have done!) you can lose your focus, create crappy content, and never build a solid income from your business.
Focusing too much on the money can frustrate you because you’re not going to see income right away. It takes time to build your blog, grow your traffic, and create a community that trusts you.
Not to say that you can’t see income fairly quickly – you can! – but if you don’t, and you’re focused on the money, you begin to wonder why you’re not seeing the money, when it will come in, and that can distract you big-time.
So learn how to monetize your blog, research your monetization, plan out what you’re going to do to make money, and then move on to creating content!
