Mommy Bloggers Make MoneyMommy bloggers make money – good money – with blogging and this top mom blogger is just one great example of what you can accomplish. Jessica Casteneda started blogging as a way to beat boredom at work and discovered that she could build a business AND be home with her kids – both under 3! – by following her passion.

She’s not only making over $1,000 a month, she’s making several times that and was able to quit her job just a few months ago.

Originally starting out as a “mom blog,” Jessica narrowed her niche and is now making a full-time income from her blog, where she shares her tips and experience as she partakes in her own fitness journey. I’m truly inspired by this mom’s story and hope you will be, too.

Mommy Bloggers Make Money

Hi there! My name is Jessica and I am a fitness blogger over at www.EasyLivingToday.com. I have been blogging for 2.5 years and it is the best decision I have ever made! My degree is in Marketing and I am also a Personal Trainer. However, I really wanted to stay at home with my two sons, so I used my experiences to create my blog and work from home – I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Key Insight #1

Jessica started to focus her blog on her personal experience, which is essential for tapping into your passion! No matter what niche you choose, you want to love it.

1. What were your initial goals when you started and how have these goals changed over time?

When I started blogging, I was pregnant with my first son. At that time I really just wanted a place where I could talk about my experiences and journal about being a new mom. I was working full time and had a lot of free/down time at my job, so blogging would keep me “entertained” while at work. As time went on, I realized that I could make a full-time income from my blog and my goal went from pure entertainment to being able to quit my job and blog full-time.

Key Insight #2

Mommy bloggers make money when they take their blog from hobby to business. That’s true for any entrepreneur. You MUST think like a business owner if you want to make money from your blog.

2. Why did you choose to blog over other business models? How did you choose your niche and how did you know it was the right one?

I’ve always liked writing, and being on video was never my thing. I even remember wanting to be a journalism major in college but never went through with it. So blogging just seemed natural to me.

My original idea was to be a mom blog, but I quickly realized that wasn’t for me. I caught myself talking more about fitness and clean eating, which have always been passions of mine. The more I talked about it, the more my blog came into its own and became a fitness blog.

Key Insight #3

Don’t be tied into your first idea or even your first niche. Jessica was flexible, allowing her business to shift. She started as a mom blog and evolved into a fitness blog – mommy bloggers make money in all kinds of niches. Don’t be afraid to open up to “outside the box thinking” and look for other profitable avenues for your blog.

3. What’s your personal philosophy regarding content? How do you know what your prospective customers are looking for? Where does this information come from? Do you write all content yourself or do you outsource?

I really believe in writing about what comes naturally so that it never feels forced. If I have to force myself to do it, it’ll feel like any other 9-5 job. Since my niche is something I’m so passionate about, I seem to get a ton of ideas. I’ll be going for a run and will come up with 5 ideas just based off of that run. That’s why it’s so important to write about something you love.

I know what my readers are looking for because they are where I was a year ago, trying to figure it all out. So as I do things, I think “that would have been good to know a year ago, so I should share it with my readers.”

I am a Certified Personal Trainer, so my information comes from things I have learned in my studies and over time. I write all of my content myself.

Key Insight #4

Being so passionate about her niche, Jessica knows it inside and out and can therefore easily write about what her readers want. You don’t have to be an expert; you just need to live and breathe your niche to come from a place of leadership. You can do this by researching topics and implementing what you write about. Mommy bloggers make money when they get real with their readers and readers love it when they can experience things right alongside you.

4. Do you have any original tips or techniques for getting traffic and getting your readers to engage with you through your blog?

I make sure to always respond to any comments my readers leave or to any emails they send. When you really engage with your readers, they keep coming back because they know they can count on you.

Key Insight #5

Jessica is there for her readers, showing up by posting, responding to comments, and being available. This sets you apart by building a relationship with your audience. Your readers get to know you – if you stay open and real.

5. How long did it take to start earning income from your business? Is it a full-time income (replacing a job) or a part-time income? What would you say has been the reason for your success?

When I started blogging, I was making about $50/60 a month right away. But I was kind of stuck there for a while. After 2.5 years, I’m now making a full-time income that is more than I made at my full-time job. I’m pretty confident that I am successful now because I took the time to get to know my readers and engage with them over the years. I also invested in learning how to blog and that helped incredibly.

Key Insight #6

Jessica invested in herself by getting an “education in blogging.” I happen to know that the courses she went through took her income from approximately $200 a month to over $1,000 in just a few months (and other mommy bloggers make money doing the same things she does!) You can sign up for these affordable blogging courses, too, and save $15 when you use the coupon code SAVVYBLOGGER.

6. How many different revenue streams do you have? Which ones perform best?

I have 4 different revenue streams: my own product, affiliates, ads and sponsored posts. It really varies by month, but right now my best performing revenue stream is my own product with ads being a close second.

Key Insight #7

You know that saying, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket?” That applies to us in this business. Jessica sets a great example of diversification – monetizing her blog in many different ways. This secures her income, so that should one revenue stream change, the others are still running smoothly. Mommy bloggers make money with more than just ads and affiliates, they also create their own products, do sponsored posts, offer sponsored blog listings, memberships, and more. You can get very creative with your monetization strategy, always adding value and keeping your reader’s best interests in mind.

7. Do you use social media to promote your online business? If yes, which platform(s)? Has it had an impact?

Absolutely! It’s the best way to engage with readers. I use Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Key Insight #8

Social media is another way to promote our blogs and build relationships with our audience. It’s also a powerful way to network with other bloggers and even affiliate partners.

8. What has been your biggest challenge as an online business owner?

My biggest challenge has been finding the balance between work and kids. I have an infant and a toddler at home, so at the end of the day I’d love to just lay in bed and get some rest. I’m learning to work instead, though.

Key Insight #9

Here, Jessica speaks about something we all struggle with – finding enough time to build our businesses. Luckily, blogging can adapt to our schedule and this is how mommy bloggers make money – by working around a job, or kids…just about anything. And I think Jessica’s done a great job of balancing business and family!

9. What would your best advice be to someone just starting out looking to make $1,000 or more each month by blogging? What would be your advice to someone who is struggling to make money online with their blog?

My best advice is to find a niche you’re passionate about and can talk about forever. Your passion will come through in your writing and will excite your readers. Then be sure to engage with your readers so they become loyal readers.

Key Insight #10

Blog with passion and create content that makes readers eager to come back. This is great advice! I would add that when you solve your reader’s problem or help them in some way, you naturally write in a way that makes them want to come back for more.

10. And finally…What do you enjoy most about being an online business owner? How has it impacted you, your family, and/or your life?

I love the fact that I can do it all from home while being with my babies. I wouldn’t trade this time I have been able to spend with them for anything in the world! If I had to work a 9-5 I would barely get to see them.

Key Insight #11

This is what it’s all about for me and many other income bloggers – the freedom-based lifestyle. Freedom to live how you want. Freedom to be home with your children. Freedom to travel – or not. And the gift of loving what you do so much you can do it all day, every day.

How Do Mommy Bloggers Make Money?

Mommy bloggers make money from their blogs when they take it from hobby or “just for fun” to business. When you blog as a business, your mindset is different, your content is different, your intention is different…you are “in it” to help your readers (meaning it’s all about them) and to make money.

Ideally you…

Jessica’s blog is a great example of each of these tips.

Fabulous article and series, Julie! Thank you so much for sharing, Jessica. I’m new to blogging and I’m still learning how it all fits together with my current coaching business. This helps greatly in terms of education, motivation, and inspiration.

Hey Jessica! First off, you kick butt! 🙂 Secondly, I too am a blogger that makes a full-time income (which rocks, however, I am very curious about the product you sell – as that’s not a source of revenue for me… and I am also curious about your advertising… Advertising just does NOT work for me – ha!)… I am going to check out your blog now and stalk you, tee he he!
