Excuse me while I freak out because I am completely overwhelmed by blogging right now. And I imagine you know exactly how that feels. Makes you wanna eat something sugary and delicious like that yummy-looking sprinkled donut, right?
This blog has gotten off to a pretty good start. It’s been set up, my settings are done, plugins are activated, I have a home page and two comprehensive posts up, and I’m working on a kickass blogging series, Blogging Smart and Sassy. I even have a presence on social media.
Not bad, if you ask me. But I’m a perfectionist. Instead of cheering myself on, I’m beating myself up over the posts that haven’t been written yet. I’m pushing myself to “get it done” faster – whatever “it” is.
Here’s the thing: there is no “it” because “it” is never done. And if that makes sense to you, you are SO in the right place! 😆
What I mean is, there will always be another post to write, another task to complete, another goal to achieve. This blog will never be done. It will always be a living, changing thing.
So it’s absolutely important to set my goals and go after them. It’s definitely important to develop a consistent habit of posting to this blog. But it’s also OK to build at a pace that’s right for me… and I’m still discovering what that pace is.
I would love to post daily, but 3-5 times a week would be great. But if I could only post once a week, I think I could be good with that.
And if you can only post weekly, that’s ok, too. Let’s remember that as long as we are taking action, we are doing our best. Let’s push to get out of our comfort zones and do better, but not be so hard on ourselves we sabotage our goals.
How I’m Going to Go from Overwhelmed by Blogging to Motivated
If you’re feeling overwhelmed right now, I get it. There is so much to do, you know? But we don’t have to do it all today or this week. Let’s agree that we’re moving along quite well, thank you very much, and one step at a time we will see progress and success.
We’re overwhelmed and that’s ok. Now let’s talk about what we can do to get over it.
My first step was posting about being overwhelmed by blogging and about what I’m feeling because I know I’m not alone. Maybe my story can help someone going through the same thing.
Next, I’m going to step away from working on the blog. I’m going to do something to relieve the stress. See that photo under the headline? I want to do something like that, something that takes me away from the things that are making me freak out and put me in a place to sort of reset.
Here are some ideas I’ve come up with for getting past overwhelm:
- Get up and stretch
- Go for a walk
- Read a book…preferrably on the beach or in a bubble bath
- Love on your pet
- Watch a recorded T.V. show
- Knock out some housework
- Do a brain dump (commit to writing down on 2 or 3 pages whatever comes to mind – dump it!)
- Take some deep breaths and meditate for 3 minutes
- Color (I have some really cool adult coloring books!)
- Dive into a hobby – I crochet and love it. It’s meditative, calms me down, and gets my mind off whatever is bugging me.
Those are things we can do if we want to get away from the computer. But there are also some constructive things we can do on the computer, too.
- Looking for forums we can participate in
- Researching topics to write about
- Searching for blogs we can read and participate on – better yet, contribute! Add value to a post that you connect with
- Enjoying some just-for-fun YouTube channel surfing
Let me tell you, I feel 100 times better after writing this post. And I know I’ll feel better still by getting away from the computer for a little while.
It really doesn’t take much to recharge your batteries when you’re overwhelmed by blogging, so make sure you do so whenever you need to.
Your blog will be that much better because of it!
Overwhelmed by blogging, too? What do you do to get past it? What do you do to refresh your mind and heart? Let me know in the comments!
